Are You Ready to Get Hooked on SharePoint Webhooks?

Calling all SharePoint Developers! It’s time to improve your organization’s processes and end-user notifications within SharePoint. In September, SharePoint Webhooks hit the stage when put intoDeveloper Preview. The promise of webhooks for process notification and automation has been keeping us on edge, waiting for the day we could safely use them in production. The wait is over, this week SharePoint Webhooks became Generally Available.
What is SharePoint Webhooks?
By improving the way service-oriented tasks are created in SharePoint, Webhooks allow developers to create applications that can receive and respond to events in SharePoint in real time, such as content being added, modified or removed within SharePoint. Think “event receivers.” Specifically, Webhooks are utilized to manipulate the behavior of a web page or application. They deliver executable code, commonly known as callbacks, which allow the Developer more control over where and when content is edited, updated, or changed.
What does Generally Available Mean for SharePoint Developers?
Now, with the availability of webhooks, SharePoint Developers can receive notifications on events that occur in SharePoint through custom applications. It’s pretty simple. A SharePoint developer can register a Webhook with a REST API and then pick and choose what type of actions (a.k.a., events) they would like to be notified about, such as an item being added (ItemAdded) or deleted (ItemDeleted) in SharePoint. Once notified, the developer can easily respond to actions with code with their custom callback functionality
The Future of SharePoint Webhooks
SharePoint Webhooks provide the necessary information through simple push notifications, so you and your organization can continually maintain productivity. Since SharePoint Webhooks became generally available this week, many updates should be heading our way. Microsoft wants to regularly add more behaviors that developers can tap into within SharePoint. And with more behaviors, there will be more opportunity to build collaborative and succinct workflow processes supported by SharePoint Webhooks.
