Two SharePoint branding solutions to jumpstart your project
We wanted to share an awesome resource you might find handy if you’re looking to better understand SharePoint Branding.
Recently Eric contributed to SharePoint Saturday Silicon Valley leading a session on SharePoint Branding titled “Change Your Look”. Much of the session was centered on an introduction to branding SharePoint including a detailed and deliciously geeky presentation on the fundamentals of how to brand SharePoint.
While the information provided a highly valuable foundation, Eric took a step further and created an open source project called JumpStart Branding for SP 2010. With this end to end branding solution, Eric set out to create a complete branding package you would use in a real world setting.
The first part of the Jumpstart addresses a leaner and cleaner Master Page removing unneeded code but still robust enough to be used as a great starting place for most projects. Eric also includes one replacement for the v4.master Master Page for both foundation and server based sites.
The second part of the Jumpstart package are two Visual Studio 2010 projects that can be used to package your branding files like Master Pages, Page Layouts, Stylesheets, Image files, and more, so that they can be deployed as features in SharePoint. Eric includes detailed documentation, examples, and more importantly, resources on how to install and customize these solutions.
Obviously many resources already exist on the web that help explain SharePoint Branding but Eric’s approach thoughtfully considers all the pieces to not only activate the branding features correctly, but also handling the housekeeping issues when facing deactivating features.
The best part is this package is free – we aren’t even asking for your email. This open source project was created in hopes to provide some value to the SharePoint community.
